Ah September, the fresh, brand new academic year where the youthful return to school, and the teachers trudge back to work. Of course, with Christmas just around the corner it’s also the time where a vast array of seasonal jobs leap forth, obviously where there’s a job opportunity there’s also the irksome interview. Due to my harrowing school days thankfully being over for some time now, I have decided to guide today’s post towards those pesky evaluations of professional competency! By some utter miracle I have been offered every job I’ve been interviewed for, therefore with my impressive 100% success rate I figured I’d share a few tips from the master and provide you with a bit of a cheat sheet, starting with the presentation of the outer shell, then moving most importantly, onto the portrayal of ones personality and proficiency. I’d like to think that something can be taken away from this post and applied to various situations aside from an interview, therefore please don’t be discouraged by the propulsion of this here post.

1. Preparation is Key!
Research the job role and company a little, you aren’t expected to become a walking encyclopedia for the place, but a little background knowledge never hurt anyone and you may be put on the spot when you least expect it.

2. Back to Basics
Nobody wants to hire somebody with a repugnant body odour so be sure to keep your personal hygiene in check! Don’t overdo the fragrance, either. This seems so obvious, like, duh! I have known people to go about their daily lives smelling less than desirable, though, therefore it evidently needs mentioning!

3. Comfortably Classy
You want to look professional but your own comfort is even more important, I can’t stress enough the significance of feeling comfortable, for if you aren’t then it will show whilst potentially causing a distraction for yourself simultaneously. No ill fitting clothes!

4. Forget the Falsies!
Over the top make-up doesn’t belong at an interview, it can actually prove to be extremely off putting for the person conducting the meeting. Of course, wear some make-up if that’s how you feel the most comfortable, it can show that you’re making the effort, though strive to keep it minimal and natural.

5. Confidence and Communication
Make eye contact, smile often and speak clearly. Body language is important too, be mindful to not close yourself off in any way or to slouch. Of course, it goes without saying to mind the vocabulary, the F word is never professional!

6. Tattoos and Piercings
As you will have noticed, I wear a lip ring. Tattoos and piercings can be a tricky issue for many when preparing for a new job and personally I chose to keep my lip ring in! I did however make the point to bring this up myself when being interviewed for my current job, by saying that if it would pose a problem with regards to any workplace policies or procedures that I would of course remove it. This shows a willingness for the job and every place will have their own set rules and regulations. As it is, I’m not required to take mine out and have since had my cartilage pierced, too!

7. Ask Questions
In every interview there will come that time, usually towards the end, where you’re asked if you have any questions yourself. If you’re anything like my younger self then you’ll absolutely dread this part, but it’s actually quite crucial! By even having so much as one question to ask you are showing a keen interest whilst proving you’re able to think for yourself, it’s not all about what you can do for them, it’s about discovering if the job is just as much a fit for you, too. Sometimes it will be hard to find something to ask because the person conducting the interview may have been thorough in detailing the job and other considerations, so what do I do in this instance? It’s quite simple, I bring out my cheeky side and ask “When do I start?” Of course, this may not work for some, but I’ve found I tend to get a laugh from the other person when I ask this, have been told before that I have the job, or in cases where they have to confer with another person, have simply been told when I will hear back from them. There’s no reason why an interview can’t be a little fun, too!

I do hope that this will prove to be in some way useful for you, don’t stress it too much and simply be yourself, show the best side of you! Have you had a best and worst interview? I’d love to hear all about your experiences, leave me a comment below! Of course don’t forget to check out the other ladies posts from the link up over at everythingandnothin’.

  4. I absolutely hate going to interviews. I don’t have many under my belt because I’ve managed to get hired without them a couple times, but it’s that time again.I’m so glad it’s fall now. My summer attire that I’m comfortable in is NOT work appropriate. I’m so jealous of that shirt btw, it looks amazing on you and I LOVE these tips. It’s helping me calm down and stop stressing the interview.
